2020 Petite Sirah, Thompson Vineyard, Santa Barbara
When we began the winery, we wanted to do some one-off special wines, and our first one is the 2020 Petite Sirah from the Thompson Vineyard. Planted in 1990, this cool climate Petite is showcasing the true expression of the varietal. While dark and inky in color, it still remains restrained and elegant.
There are some Petite’s I have enjoyed with a good amount of age, the 1994 La Jota, Pride 2001 and Ridge 1991, all with which I tried at 15-20 years of age and fell in love with the potential of great Petite.
The Thompson Vineyard is in the newly appointed Alisos Canyon AVA, wedged in between the Santa Maria Valley to the north and the Santa Rita Hills to the south, just outside of Los Alamos. It's warmer days and cool evenings from the ocean breeze allows for the fruit to ripen at a very slow pace. This creates a greater complexity of flavors and structure.
Floral notes of purple rose petals, jasmine, lavender with bright raspberry, blueberry and bramble. A spicy wine with coriander, fennel and cinnamon with a dark core of blackberry cobbler and liquorish underneath. It has a feminine mouthfeel, with dry, silky tannins. It is a Wyoming cowboy at the New York City Ballet! A wine that will shine in 15-20 years.
